Since its conception in 2011, we at Craft and Culture have been extremely fortunate to have found and fostered so much support and energy from artists, makers, and craftspeople alike. From a small business birthed by a pair of excitable minds, Craft and Culture has grown into a global network of correspondents and photographers; all united by the express goal of bringing attention to beauty, craft, and culture.
Last month, Craft and Culture had the pleasure of partnering with a newcomer to the Capitol Hill scene, Standard Goods. A lifestyle boutique focusing on all things Pacific Northwest and with an emphasis on things made in North America, Standard Goods joined us in celebration of our five year anniversary and their official grand opening. We brought some friends of ours together for an evening of live music, new designers, art, and of course refreshments.
Decorating the walls, Seattle-based photographer Lauren Rodriquez displayed prints from her latest projects. Dream-like and surreal in imagery, her process involves using expired rolls of film, an array of photo-editing techniques both analog and digital; and her own secret spot for film development (we hear it is somewhere in Portland,OR). Check her out on Instagram @lalalalaurn.
After a meet and greet with Hillians and some of the featured artists, we were treated to a performance by the very talented Maiah Manser. A powerful one-woman band, Maiah uses the keyboard, foot peddles and voice manipulation to craft a soundscape uniquely her own. Striving to make music that is a reflection of the 21st century conundrum of our digital vs. organic world, her live-created loops and beautiful lyrics weave into captivating combinations that you can check out on her bandcamp.
For sale alongside the Standard Goods collection we curated a selection of craftspeople from the community who, in the following days, we are excited to be sharing more of. For now, if you find yourself in the area swing by 701 E. Pike Street to say hello to our friends Jeff or Kathreen over at Standard Goods!
